Share | Selection of Transformer Insulation System (IEC/EN 62368-1)

2021-05-10

The product is applying for IEC/EN 62368-1 certification. If the heat resistance grade of the transformer is higher than level 105 (A), the transformer insulation system (EIS) should meet the requirements of IEC 60085. The standard is as follows:

For thermal classifications above Class 105, the E/S shall comply with IEC 60085

There are very few insulation system documents that comply with IEC 60085 in the market. So, can the commonly recognized "EIS" (UL 1446) from UL be accepted?

The answer is yes. The basis for this decision is as follows:

If a Electrical Insulation Systems needs temperature limit higher than Class 105 (Class A), IEC 62368-1:2014 and 2017 requires an insulation system (EIS) in accordance with IEC 60085.

As there is a limited number of Electrical Insulation Systems that are documented in accordance with IEC 60085, could UL recognized Electrical Insulation Systems (in accordance with UL 1446) be accepted until there is a sufficient database for systems that comply with EC 60085?

Decision

Electrical Insulation Systems recognized in accordance with UL 1446 are also accepted..

Explanatory notes

There are no significant differences between IEC 60085 and UL 1446 that would imply any safety risk in end products according to IEC 62368-1.

EIS categories OBJS2/OBJY2 (UL 1446) and ODCA2/OCTU2 (IEC 60085) are listed at the UL website.
