[New Standard Released] IEC Has Just Published 2 New EMC Standards

2023-03-27

Electromagnetic Compatibility · New Standard Introduced

In February 2023, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) newly released two standards in the field of electromagnetic compatibility, namely IEC TR 61000-1-1:2023 and IEC TR 61000-5-1:2023. These two standards respectively replace IEC TR 61000-1-1:1992 and IEC TR 61000-5-1:1996. Both standards are the first revisions.

  This part of IEC 61000 is intended to describe and explain various terms that are of great significance for the design and evaluation of electromagnetic compatibility equipment and systems, and which are relevant to practical applications.

  In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the differences between the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests conducted in standardized configurations and those carried out in other locations, such as at the manufacturing site of the device, equipment or system or at the installation site of the device, equipment or system (for on-site testing or measurement).

  Complying with national standards

  The national standard GB/T 17624.1-1998 "Electromagnetic Compatibility - Overview - Application and Interpretation of Basic Terms and Definitions of Electromagnetic Compatibility" is equivalent to IEC 61000-1-1:1992. The coordinating unit is the National Electromagnetic Compatibility Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC246), and the standard is currently in an active state.

  Differences between the old and new versions of the technology

  Compared with IEC 61000-1-1:1992, the second edition includes the following significant technical changes:

  (a) The overall description of the electromagnetic environment has been updated in accordance with IEC TR 61000-2-5;

  b) Updated the descriptions of the emission source, potential susceptible equipment/systems, and coupling mechanisms;

  c) The contents proposed for revocation in IEC TR 61000-2-3 and IEC TR 61000-2-5 have been included.

Standard range

In order to ensure the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of electrical and electronic equipment or systems used in industrial, commercial and residential environments, this part of IEC 61000-5 provides general requirements and guidelines for mitigation methods. It is applicable to all equipment and systems that are sensitive to electricity and electronics, as well as to high-emission-level devices that may deteriorate the overall electromagnetic (EM) environment around them. It is mainly applicable to new facilities, but also to modifications and improvements of existing facilities.

For certain specific issues, such as the design and implementation of grounding systems including grounding electrodes and grounding networks, the design and implementation of connecting instruments or systems to the earth or grounding networks, the selection and installation of applicable cables, as well as the design and implementation of mitigation measures including shielding enclosures, high-frequency filters, isolation transformers, surge protection devices, etc., these will be covered in other sections of IEC 61000-5. This document describes the basic measures.

The EMC-related suggestions provided in this document are neither related to the safety of the facilities nor to the efficient transmission of electricity within the facilities. However, both of these main aspects are also taken into consideration in the EMC suggestions. In terms of improving the EMC of the installed sensitive equipment or systems, these two aspects can be implemented simultaneously, and there is no contradiction with the application of this document and the related safety requirements. For specific facilities, the designers and installers are responsible for choosing the most applicable relevant suggestions.

Complying with national standards

The national standard GB/T 17624.1-1998 "Electromagnetic Compatibility - Guidelines for Installation and Mitigation - General Requirements" is equivalent to IEC TR 61000-5-1:1996. The coordinating unit is the National Electromagnetic Compatibility Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC246), and the standard is currently in an active state.

Differences between the old and new versions of the technology

Compared with IEC TR 61000-5-1:1996, the second edition includes the following significant technical changes:

a) The technical content has been revised, and the clauses and sub-clauses have been adjusted;

b) The terms are consistent with those in other parts of the IEC 61000 series, such as in accordance with IEC TR 61000-2-5;

c) An overview of the IEC 61000-5 series has been added in Appendix A.
