SEMI S2

Semiconductor Equipment EHS

【Introduction to SEMI Standards】

To mitigate safety risks, the semiconductor industry adopts a wide range of prevention and management measures. Among the most typical practices is making SEMI S2 safety certification a mandatory requirement when purchasing equipment systems. Compliance with SEMI requirements not only meets relevant international regulations, but is also one of the necessary conditions required by insurance providers in the semiconductor industry.

SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International) is the global industry association serving the semiconductor manufacturing supply chain. Founded in 1970, it is headquartered in California, USA.
SEMI S2 is a safety standard that specifies basic health and safety requirements for process equipment suppliers.
SEMI S2 focuses on performance considerations and covers environmental, health and safety (EHS) conditions for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Specifically, the standard addresses safety in various fields including electrical, mechanical, fire protection, chemical, radiation, noise and shock resistance, representing the basic safety requirements of semiconductor manufacturers.

【Why is SEMI S2 Certification Required?】

Semiconductor production lines for chip or panel processing consist of hundreds of semiconductor processing tools, forming an automated production line. During operation, semiconductor equipment itself involves various hazards, including energy hazards, electric shock, high temperature, mechanical risks, noise, hazards to human health, etc. The hazards on the production line multiply with the number of equipment, which may bring huge incalculable losses to end‑user factories.
For this reason, SEMI has established SEMI standards to prevent and reduce hazards and achieve safe production. At present, wafer fabs and panel manufacturers worldwide require that all new equipment must pass SEMI S2 certification to evaluate equipment safety, minimize risks and losses, and improve productivity.
